Between the 1940s and 1950s, Irish sisters Joan and Valerie Trimble entertained Europe through the radiowaves of the BBC, on their Tuesday Serenade series. The two-piano arrangements by Joan Trimble are played impeccably well on this disc by Una Hunt and Roy Holmes, but there's a lot more to Trimble than just the light miniatures she composed based on English and Irish folksongs. Trimble's Sonatina for Two Pianos showcases some of her most forward-thinking writing (though it never ventures into atonality). Pastorale--Hommage à F. Poulenc reveals a love for French compositions, and the songs included here on The County May song cycle (featuring baritone Joe Corbett) showcase Trimble's more serious side. Truth be told, Trimble's best work is still the short pieces for duo pianos ("The Cows are a-milking," "Gartan Mother's Lullaby")--it's cute stuff. This disc features good performances of this seldom-recorded composer. --Jason Verlinde
